Amorphous core distribution transformer

Amorphous core distribution transformer

Amorphous core transformer is made of thin foil made of ferromagnetic amorphous metal. Their higher resistance and thinner foils have been shown to lead to lower losses and better harmonic resistance. The use of amorphous metal transformers is becoming more and more popular, especially in India and China, which have been using them since 2005. Europe and the United States are slightly cautious about using this type of transformer, in part because of the high cost of production labor.
Energy researchers are excited about the prospect of reducing core losses in the grid by replacing traditional cold rolled grain oriented (CRGO) steel transformers with AMT, which can reduce core losses by up to 75%. However, in recent years, there are some concerns about the use of amorphous core transformers, especially related to the potential higher failure rate and poor overload capacity.
